VOTER INFORMATION 2008
VOTING IN VANCOUVER’S 2008 MUNICIPAL ELECTION TAKES PLACE FROM 8AM – 8PM ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15.
WHEN YOU VOTE, PLEASE REMEMBER TO MARK YOUR BALLOT IN FAVOUR OF THE 2009-2011 CAPITAL PLAN. THIS PLAN IS CRITICAL TO RENEWING AND PROVIDING INFRASTRUCTURE THROUGHOUT VANCOUVER OVER THE 2009-2011 TIME PERIOD.
WHO CAN VOTE?
Residents of Vancouver
A non-resident property owner (you live elsewhere in BC but own property in Vancouver)
You must also adhere to ALL of the following requirements:
- You are 18 years of age or older on November 15, 2008.
- You are a Canadian citizen.
- You have been a BC resident for at least six months before you register to vote.
- For Vancouver Residents, you have been a resident of Vancouver for at least 30 days immediately before you register to vote
- For Vancouver property owners (non-residents), you have owned a property in Vancouver for at least 30 days immediately before you register to vote.
- You have not been disqualified by law from voting.
HOW DO YOU VOTE?
If you are a current registered voter, you will receive a “Where to Vote” card in the mail. Take this card with you when you go to vote.
If you do not receive a “Where to Vote” card, take 2 pieces of id with you to the your Voter’s Station. If you do not know where to vote, contact the City of Vancouver.
Acceptable forms of id include:
- B.C. Driver’s Licence
- B.C. ID card from Motor Vehicle Branch
- ICBC Owner’s Certificate of Insurance and Vehicle Licence
- B.C. Care Card
- Ministry of Housing and Social Development (formerly Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance) Monthly Report/ Request for Continued Assistance (HSD081)
- Social Insurance card
- Citizenship Card
- property tax notice
- credit card or debit card
- utility bill for electricity, natural gas, water, telephone or cable services
- statutory declaration or sworn affidavit (from a notary public, lawyer, or commissioner for taking oaths)
You will be given a ballot, a special pen to mark the ballot, and a secrecy sleeve.
In the voting booth, make your choices with the special pen provided. Follow the instructions on the ballot.
Put your completed ballot in the secrecy sleeve provided.
Go to the voting machine.
Either you or a City election official will feed your ballot into the voting machine.
THOSE REQUIRING ASSISTANCE TO VOTE
If you require assistance in to marking your ballot due to a physical disability or difficulties with reading or writing, you may request help from an election official.
If you cannot physically enter the voting place, you can ask an official to come with you to a place nearby your voting station to complete your ballot.
If you have difficulty speaking or reading English, you may request assistance from an election official who may be fluent in your language or you may bring a translator.
If you are a patient in a medical or assisted-living facilities and you have a physical disability, illness, or injury that affects your ability to vote at another voting opportunity, you may apply to vote by mail.
OUT OF TOWN ON ELECTION DAY
If you are out of town on November 15 (all day), you may apply to vote by mail.
HOW TO VOTE BY MAIL
- Fill out an application form and send it to the Election Office.
- Receive mail ballot package in the mail (after November 3).
- Fill out ballot and return it to Election Office before 8:00 pm on November 15.
HOW TO VOTE IN ADVANCE
All eligible voters can vote in advance on either of the following dates from 8am – 8pm:
November 5, 8, 10 and 12
The following locations are the advance voting stations:
- City Hall
- Dunbar Community Centre
- Trout Lake Community Centre
- West End Community Centre
- Sunset Community Centre
